TheFilm and Television faculty at the Northern Sydney Institute have developed an innovative study option which allows students to complete two qualifications in just one year and get a head start in the industry.

From semester one, 2015, the Institute is offering an intensive six month Certificate IV in Screen and Media which can lead into the intensive six month Diploma of Screen and Media. This means that students graduate with the necessary skills and qualifications to enter the industry after just 12 months.

“We listened to the needs of our students and tailored this program specifically for those willing to work hard and who want get their foot in the door of the film and TV industry sooner,” said Margaret Purcell, head teacher.

Based at St Leonards Campus, the Film and TV faculty at the Northern Sydney Institute is the longest running film and TV training organisation in the state and has the only broadcast quality studios in TAFE NSW, with three operating studios.  All the teachers are experienced professionals with production experience and the facilities are aligned to current trends in the industry.

“Our graduates have a solid foundation in technical and operational skills giving them exactly what they need to get a start in the industry and they also have a good grounding and understanding of the different production roles, making them better operators and allowing them to progress in their careers quickly," said Margaret Purcell, head teacher.

"We have great business relationships with the television networks and production companies and our graduates are highly regarded in the workplace.  Many have opportunities to complete internships and others go straight into entry level job roles,” she said.

A number of commercial productions use the studio facilities at the Northern Sydney Institute. In 2013, Power Games and Rake Series 3, both shot a number of scenes on site.  Students had the opportunity to gain work experience and to observe professional crews at work.

The alumni of the Northern Sydney Institute’s Film and TV faculty work in a broad spectrum of roles in the media, both nationally and internationally, including award-winning films, documentaries, television programs and online content.

The faculty also offer shorter programs for working professionals looking to add to their skill set.  These include shooter/producer courses andediting and AVID training.
