ANYONE who lives with a young girl would know the menace that is loom bands but one particularly talented artist has turned these tiny annoying pieces of plastic into an award-winning sculpture.
Patrizia Biondi just took out the open category of Ryde Council’s Sustainable Waste to Art Prize, which was announced last week.
Biondi’s piece, titled Star - Lives Intertwined, consisted of many pieces of plastic, from old car windscreen wipers to offcuts from manufactures.
“I’ve been an artist for a long time but it was probably only the last two years, since I became more acutely aware of the debate about sustainability, that I have become more mindful,’’ she said.
“Art is the epitome of beauty but can also have a purpose and it is good to know that it does. It’s good to know that you make people think about these things they use in everyday life and how much they throw away.’’
Biondi said the message behind her work was about reminding people how everything was connected and how everything can have a significant impact.
All the winning entries of the Sustainable Waste to Art Prize will be on display at the See Street Gallery at Meadowbank TAFE until Saturday (September 5).
The gallery is open from 11am to 4pm.
