The Northern Sydney Institute’s Early Childhood Education Faculty was announced as highly commended in the National Green Gown’s Award for learning and teaching sustainability, last night in Hobart.

The Green Gown Awards recognise excellence in tertiary education institutes and rewards their sustainability actions and initiatives. The Northern Sydney Institute was one of just four finalists in the category of Learning and Teaching.

Vanessa Knox-McKay, Head Teacher Health and Community Services, said the program is an ongoing and evolutionary commitment by the faculty, to educate and inspire the early childhood sector to consider sustainability in all aspects of their service delivery.

“We aim to educate and inspire the sector to provide play spaces that encourage a connectedness with nature and a sense of belonging for children, their families, and the wider community,” said Ms Knox-McKay.

This multigenerational and community approach aims to develop sustainable skills and attitudes. With over 2,500 students and 130 early childhood professionals engaged in this program, environmental sustainability is embedded in Early Childhood Education at the Northern Sydney Institute.

“Being one of the top finalists for this excellent award demonstrates the Northern Sydney Institute’s commitment to a greener future for tomorrow’s generations,” said Ms Knox-McKay.
