When graphic design student Albert Lee said to his teacher that his work would one day grace the cover of a magazine, he had no idea that it would come true quite so soon.
The young Hornsby College student recently won the Design Graphics’ Student Design Competition, designing a cover for their DG magazine.
The theme ‘Images of the decade’ required entrants to design a cover for an imaginary issue of DG magazine, incorporating a series of articles and images that are representative of a particular decade.
His artwork ‘Revolution’ featured the decade 1900–1910, and included a caricature of Albert Einstein.
“I didn’t think I was going to win it, I had just joked about win
ning it. I was absolutely shocked to hear I had won,” said Albert.
“It is such an honour to win a competition like this.”

Albert, who has a particular interest in caricatures said the inspiration behind the design was quite simple.
“I had researched this period of time before, and I was interested in it,” he said.
“I had seen a drawing by the artist Muncha that I really liked, and I decided I really wanted to try and draw like him.”
In 2010 Albert enrolled in the Certificate III in Design Fundamentals at Hornsby College to explore his love of graphic design.
Albert is now studying a Diploma of Graphic Design and Communication and hopes to study animation at university next year.
“I love graphic art because it communicates to people in a very unique way through visuals,” he said.
“While studying graphic design, it was great to have the opportunity to have access to lots of different people with different ideas, and to work across different areas of design.”
“It helped me establish which area of design I wanted to pursue professionally.”
